THE ART OF GATHERING

Artists, Curators, Communities and Conversations

A museum comes alive through the people who gather within and around it.

Axis Museum community gathering and cultural event.

What happens when an artist meets a historian?

When a curator encounters an unfamiliar object?

When musicians, makers, researchers and communities share the same space?

New conversations begin.

Axis Museum wants to be a place where these encounters can happen.

Every artwork can be approached from more than one perspective.

Curating is much more than deciding where an object should be displayed.

A curator asks questions, investigates histories and creates relationships between objects, ideas and people.

At Axis Museum, we want to invite curatorial voices from different disciplines and backgrounds to explore themes from new perspectives.

Guest-curated exhibitions, conversations and collaborative projects can help ensure that Axis continues to evolve and that visitors encounter more than one way of interpreting a subject.

RESEARCH BEHIND THE MUSEUM

Words, objects and images can become starting points for research and reflection.

Every exhibition begins long before visitors encounter it.

Behind an exhibition may be research, conversations, interpretation, documentation, conservation and discovery.

Researchers, academics and specialists can uncover new histories, while collaborations with universities, museums and cultural institutions can broaden the questions a museum is able to investigate.

Axis wants its digital stories to reveal some of this process, allowing audiences to encounter not only exhibitions but also the people, research and thinking behind them.

COMMUNITY AS COLLABORATOR

The museum extends beyond exhibitions into spaces for encounter and participation.

Museums should not only speak to communities.

They should listen to them.

Local knowledge, memories, experiences and traditions can contribute to how cultural stories are understood and presented.

Axis aims to create opportunities for communities to participate through conversations, workshops, gatherings, events and collaborative projects.

CREATIVITY IS PARTICIPATION

Objects, making and creativity offer different ways to engage with culture.

Culture is not confined to an exhibition case.

It can be practiced through craft, heard through music, remembered through food and passed from one person to another through stories.

Making and participating can also help us appreciate the human knowledge behind the objects we encounter.

Axis aims to explore these different forms of cultural experience through its evolving program.

AN OPEN INVITATION

Axis Museum welcomes dialogue with artists, curators, researchers, educators, galleries, museums, universities, cultural organizations and community partners.

An idea might begin with an artwork.

An object.

A piece of research.

A performance.

Or simply a conversation.

Collaboration allows that first idea to become something none of us might have created alone.

A museum becomes richer when more voices contribute to its story.
